Wordle Definitions

Here are some of the new words I’ve learned while playing Wordle:

  • Fugue: a composition in which a short melody or phrase (the subject) is introduced by one part and successively taken up by others and developed by interweaving the parts
  • Catty: deliberately hurtful in one’s remarks; spiteful
  • Nadir: the lowest point in the fortunes of a person or organization
  • Extol: praise enthusiastically
  • Assay: the testing of a metal or ore to determine its ingredients and quality
  • Gofer: a person who runs errands, especially on a movie set or in an office
  • Tizzy: a state of nervous excitement or agitation
  • Loris: a small, slow-moving nocturnal primate with a short or absent tail, living in dense vegetation in southern Asia.
  • Atria: a central hall or court in a modern building, with rooms or galleries opening off it, often glass-covered
  • Thrum: make a continuous rhythmic humming sound
  • Taffy: insincere flattery
  • Ditty: a short, simple song
  • Revue: a light theatrical entertainment consisting of a series of short sketches, songs, and dances, typically dealing satirically with topical issues.
  • Primp: spend time making minor adjustments to one’s hair, make-up, or clothes
  • Bawdy: dealing with sexual matters in a comical way; humorously indecent
  • Skiff: a light rowing boat or sculling boat, typically for one person.
  • Smock: a dress or top for a woman or girl, gathered at the chest and having a loosely fitting lower part
  • Vapid: offering nothing that is stimulating or challenging; bland
  • Finch: any of various types of small singing bird with a short, wide, pointed beak
  • Plait: a single length of hair, straw, rope, or other material made up of three or more interlaced strands
  • Kazoo: a small, simple musical instrument consisting of a hollow pipe with a hole in it, over which is a thin covering that vibrates and adds a buzzing sound when the player sings or hums into the pipe
  • Ennui: a feeling of listlessness and dissatisfaction arising from a lack of occupation or excitement
  • Staid: sedate, respectable, and unadventurous
  • Shirk: avoid or neglect (a duty or responsibility

  • Blurb: a short promotional piece accompanying a piece of creative work
